Following his rheumatology fellowship, Dr. Marcus entered active military duty as Lt Cmdr, USNR. He was Chief of rheumatology division and training program at the Naval Regional Medical Center, Philadelphia, Pa. When his service ended in 1976, Dr. Marcus moved to Long Island where he helped run the rheumatology fellowship program at the Northport VA Hospital. He has continued to volunteer as attending in the rheumatology clinic.

Dr. Marcus has been a charter member of the Long island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and has been on the Executive Committee since before 1980. As the Chairman of the Public Education Committee, he has helped produce more than 20 Arthritis Foundation telethons. He is one of the official spokespersons for the foundation, and as such is frequently interviewed on radio and television by the media.
